Spam-ference in China, anyone?

Google a bit. The manager hosts the same (1st annual!) conference in multiple fields: Neurosurgery, trauma surgery, Community healthcare, Epilepsy, Infectious Disease.

They have a facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Montreal-QC/EPS-Global-Medical-Development-INC/108480102528282#!/pages/Montreal-QC/EPS-Global-Medical-Development-INC/108480102528282?v=wall&__a=15&ajaxpipe=1

Update: I have since received three new spam conference invites from EPS. This links to the one that's furthest off topic. MAP is a pathogen of dairy cattle that causes diarrhea, weight loss and decreased production. Somehow it seems appropriate for an OBGYN conference?

Welcome to the club.

I also received their invitation to the "EPS Global 1st International Immunology Conference". Exactly the same invitation (just another field of science), same place, same "program", same dates, no credible details about the "conference", no final detailed program or list of speakers just one month prior to the "conference", no committees, no details on the web. This is a spam, a sting, to get your $800 transferred directly to the bank account of some crooks. Is there any international authority to investigate the case and stop these liers?

Same thing for Critical Care conference in Montreal 2011. Two comments:

A) junior faculty frequently need invited presentations on their CV to establish a national/international reputation in their field for promotion eligibility to senior faculty ranks.

B) the EPS cities seem to be desirable travel locations, so for a mere 15 minutes of presenting work, you can have a line on your cv if you're willing to pay the conference fees

Therefore, A+B= selling you invited speaking additions to your CV for cash.

Interesting marketing loophole. Hopefully promotions committees are savvy enough, but from he quality of some of the peer review stuff (a similar exchange of cv line items for subscription/ad revenue), one has to wonder about the whole promotion process in academia.

Cheers,
MFN, MD

I have also just received an invitation though my email. This is the email which I solely use for my publications and it is obviously trawled from pubmed.

"It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the EPS Montreal International Forum on Intensive Care Medicine to be held from June 1-2, 2011, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada."

I have received invitations in the past and this has got to be the least genuine: no programme, no objectives, no statement of grants/support. It must be the only one in the world that makes a speaker pay for registration. Go at your own risk.

Well whaddya know! I just received an invitation to speak at the EPS Yangzhou Orthopedics Forum 2011, allegedly to be held on April 17 - 18, 2011 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. They would like me to speak about some work on the early tetrapod Ventastega that I published in 2008 ... so basically it's another PubMed trawl. The orthopedic relevance of fossil vertebrates that died some 365 million years ago isn't entirely obvious.

I called the number: someone answers it, I think with a Chinese accent. I asked for details. When I went into specifics like Venue, account to which money must be sent, I was asked for my email address so she could send all the details. Apparently they have (atleast) 2 conferences lined up in Montreal, and 1 in China. ("Which conference are you referring to....etc").

The phone no. +1-514-933-4119 is a Montreal number mapping to Y Lu at the address they've shown.

There's the facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/pages/EPS-Global-Medical-Development-INC/108480102528282

There's also a pdf for the Montreal Conference (upcoming) and a China conference (Sep 2010) available on google search.

It would be nice if a few more people called up/ responded to emails, and best of all, visited their office in Montreal (which can be mapped on google or bing maps), and posted what they found.

And, what is the status of this website
http://www.epscn.com/en/index.asp
which seems to be a medical tech/ information company in China? is it (a) real, and unaware of the use of their name EPS by folks in Canada/China, (b) fake, and an elaborate website put up to satisfy people who search for EPS. It really is very elaborate. (c) totally unrelated?

Well, look at that! Now it's the "EPS Global International Forum on Neuroscience, to be held on July 9-11, 2011 in the beautiful and historical city of Nanjing, Jiangsu, China."

If you go to one of the websites listed in the invitation e-mail (www.epswordlink.com), you can actually find pictures of people who supposedly actually attended earlier conferences. I wonder what they were like?

There is apparently also going to be a "EPS Chongqing International Neuroscience Forum 2011 which will be held from April 22nd to 23rd, 2011 in Chongqing, China". Check out the conference website (http://epsglobal.ca/Meeting_en/new_en/20110208/173.html#). Note that (1) one month before the conference, there is zero information on speakers, program or sponsors, and (2) the top of the page says "Chongqing International Heart Conference Date: April 22-23, 2011". Imagine that, a conference that can't decide whether it's about neuroscience or the heart! Who said the brain is at war with the heart? They are clearly the same organ!

Thanks a lot, Dr. Yao Lu or Dr. Lu Yao (both versions show up in my e-mail), but that PhD at the end of my name means I'm a bit smarter than you seem to think. Please take my advice and take a flying leap off some bridge in Nanjing, assuming you have any intention of attending your own "conference" on July 11.

I recently received and invitation to the international neuroscience forum in Nanjing July, 2011. It was the exact language others have posted. Interestingly, recent papers I have published (in cognitive psychology) were referenced in regards to my 'special guest speaker' status. When I enquired about funds for guest speakers, this was the reply,

"...The registration fee is $800 USD, but we would like to offer you a discounted registration fee of $700USD. As a guest speaker, you only need to pay the registration fee. We will provide you with the free hotel accommodations (3 nights, July 9, 10 and 11) during the conference in Nanjing as a privilege, as well as the free airport pickup service and meals during the conference. We regret to say but for this time, neither we nor the committee have any financial support for the airfares. You need to afford your own airfares. "

And the due date for the abstract is 1 month before the conference.

Another new conference where you can waste your money is called: the EPS Shijiazhuang International Forum on Life Science and Biotechnology to be held from May 23-25, 2011, in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China.

So thanks for the information here, but having a look on their website, I was already warned. It would be interesting, if anyone has ever attended this meeting or if the only thing which is travelling to these "conferences" is the money you would have sent?!

Got the same for the Neuroscience meeting (about my previous work). I thought it was scam as soon as I saw the e-mail, so I googled and found this blog (esepcially obvious when you open thier provided website links and see advertising for dating services!). I have been receiving several invitations for various conferences in China, with somewhat similar themes (you are invited, but you might need to pay for it; or invited to speak, might pay, if you send us an absract). Different names though.
Unless the invitation comes from a credible academic/researcher who you know worls in the field you are in or close to it, or is published (check PubMed if you are in the Biology area), and the website does not display ads for dating service, fitness and mortgage insurance, I would strongly encourage colleagues to do their deliginace.

I have actually been to one of the conferences 'AS A VALUABLE GUEST SPEAKER?!' . i had seen the blog before going for the conference. Conference actually took place! However, it was only dr yao lu and his assistants(3 girls) were present at the conference. conference was attended only by the speakers. If you calculate their expenditure, i think they can make some money out of every conference(for 500 dollars of registration fee, u r given accomodation worth 160 dollars, 2 meals, airport pickup, one line in cv as a speaker). the positives of the conference being - u get to meet people from different parts of the world(all the speakers had some credentials), and a good tour to china. DONT EVEN TALK ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THE CONFERENCE! please draw your own conclusions from this information(first hand information)! i think its a money making stint.

I have received a similar letter in March, for the EPS Yangzhou Orthopedics Forum 2011 in April. I answered politely that my schedule was full and I could not go. My research is not really related to Orthopedics. One month letter, I get another one for the EPS Xian International Forum on Orthopedics, which is to be held in June. As much as I would like to believe that my research is of such interest that they absolutely want me to go to one of their meeting, this does not seem serious to me.

Just a small clarification: I have received an invite to be a "valuabe speaker" in EPS Shi-Jia-Zhuang International Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Conference 2011, which will be held during May 23 -25, 2011 in Shi-Jia-Zhuang, Hebei, China. Note that this is not on Life Science & Biotechnology but on pharmaceutical and nutraceutical on same dates, same place!! Needless to say, my published work is unrelated to theme.

Get this... I have received numerous conference speaker requests from this fraud. Moreover, for fun, I applied to one of his job openings as a 'manuscript editor'.... here was his response:

Dear (my name removed)

I have received your email/CV, gone through your CV and am satisfied you have the requirement to do this job. Yes this position can be occupied from a remote location.I will like to know what location you have in mind.

I am in the U.K now and will be coming back to Canada in some days from now.

I know it is improper for me to be asking you this favour but i am in dire need here.I mistakenly lost my hand bag here in the U.K that contains almost everything that can return me back home including my passport, ticket, cash, credit cards etc. I am kind of stranded and will need a short time loan from you (£1,500.00) to sort things out from here.

I will pay you back as soon as i am back to Canada after which we will arrange a meeting to conlcude on the modalities of the part time Manuscript editor job.

If there is a way you can help,i will be very greatful. I will be needing this help urgently. I will appreciate if you can send same amount via western union money transfer to me. I can use my driver's license to receive it

Receiver's name: Yao Lu
Address: London, U.K

If you find it in your heart to help with this kind gesture, send to my email, the sender's name, sender's address and Money transfer control number MTCN.

Once again accept my sincere apology for bothering you with this. Necessity knows no bounds and that is why i have asked for your help in this regards.

Well, let's say it honestly: Canada is a very corrupt country. When their finance minister Martin stole 100 million dollars they awarded him the post of prime minister. No wonder that Dr. Yao Lu (or Lu Yao, whatever!) finds his safehouse there. The ethical standard of the Canadian Nation is close to zero. There are some good people there, but most people are corrupt. I am talking about a level of corruption similar to what exsisted in the communist countries: you have the power you take everything.

This con artist is preying on our need to have international recognition (as posted above) and, also, our vanity. Who wouldn't feel pleased to be invited out of the blue as a speaker to an international conference? Good thing we are researchers and, as such, we think of all possibilities and do our homework! Thanks for the blogging!

I've just got a similar message but it's an invite to the "EPS Montreal International Renewable Energy Forum 2011, which will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada during August 15 - 16, 2011". Apparently it is a one day conference on a bizarrely broad range of energy-related topics:

Very believable.

I am a veterinarian and was quite surprised to receive an invitation letter to the Hohhot conference on animal science, to be held on the 3 to 5th of August, 2011--funny, same as the pediatric conference!

I received one of these "invitations" to speak in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. I'd be interested in speaking on my topic, spread of influenza, but I didn't understand how it fit into a Biodiversity conference.

I looked up EPS and this Dr. Lu has done a great deal for a man of advanced age. And I found two different sets of pictures. One is of a man in his 50's the other is a man obviously way too young. Both seem to provide conferences in China.

See: http://www.epsworldlink.com/
Also: http://www.epsglobal.ca/index.html
I don't find him at McGill, but that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't there.

I find that both web sites go to the same place in Quebec, so they are the same people. Suite 305, 1625 Maisoneuve. According to Google, that is supposed to be the Riverview Medical Center. The Street View reads, "Le Chatel" on the awning.

They probably have conferences with some people attending. That makes it legal if people come, paying their own freight. From what I gather, they collect a special rate of $800 a head times around 50 people or so per conference, to receive $40,000 once or twice a month. Someone shows up as Dr. Lu, a keynote is given and some agenda for exchange of ideas happens. People present.

In China, $40,000 to $80,000 per month goes a long way. Call it $720,000 to $1.4 million a year. That's a decent small business. And, it might even grow. In China, that will go a long way. See: http://www.worldsalaries.org/china.shtml

Engineers make $1,000 a month. Do the math.

I just received a similar letter of invitation. This scam is actually quite sophisticated: they referenced a recent paper in a peer-reviewed journal. However, after calling them, it became obvious that they were not willing to pay travel expenses, were not willing to pay hotel rates, and were charging an extremely high registration fee. What is particularly outrageous about this is that this is a scam targeted at academics and professional researchers.

I think it is a real conference... if you get evaluation points from your employer for giving invited lectures, but no one is interested in you... this is your chance!
Just take 800 $ from your project budget, have a few nice days abroad and add an invited lecture to your CV.

However: Experienced researchers will stay away from these conferences.

Thanks for writing about this. I too have received an email, and for a split second I was taken in - it looks very authentic. I was pretty sure the email was spam but this blog post and discussion confirmed it for me. Very disappointed not to get an all-expenses trip to China :(

Greetings,

I must admit that, as a Sessional Instructor I too was initially excited to be invited (thinking it would look good on my CV).

I received an invitation to Shanghai China for Aug 5-7 2011. Their e-mail address used was: cmm06@epsworldlink.com.

I have indicated an interest to attend, as long as I do not have to pay the 800US Registration fee. I likely will not obtain a response. My wife (who is from Shanghai) and I will be there at that time anyway.

I would be interested in obtaining their response (if any).

Thanks for this blog.

New conference topic: "The 2nd International Community Healthcare & Healthcare Management Summit, which will be held on August 5-7, 2011 in Shanghai, China"

This endeavor must be generating enough income to cover the PubMed search time. Interesting to experience it personally - the others who've written are right - who wouldn't feel honored to be recognized with a trip to China -- except you have to pay to get there and pay for the conference!

Just ask them the information about your articles, I believe they don't know who you are and the details in your academic work. In fact, Dr.Lu don't care about it.He just care your payment. Dr. Lu, shame on you as a doctor!

A PhD student of mine received a similar invitation letter. For an international conference in Dermatology. The work was published in Food Chemistry :) And the invitation was sent to my e-mail address:) Yiu Lu, "MD, PhD" (wise choice, it will give you million hits when googled) did not even bother checking who was the corresponding author of the article... It gives a clue how many invites he sents daily.

Interestingly, I was wondering what my paper has got to do with Urological Surgery that I will be chosen as a valuable guest speaker. That made me curious and suspicious and so I Googled Yang Lu + EPS Montreal International Forum on Urological Surgery and saw a reference to Spam-ference, which led me to this blog. Let all that received such invitation forward same to colleagues worldwide and warn them and so run Lu and his conference organizers out of business, hahahaha!

Ah, this is obviously the unofficial community for those who received this spam scam! Mine was for a conference on higher education in a month - and was based on a paper on the links between the ancient Greeks sophists and modern medical education from 2009!

Looking
through the comments above, quite a few people have asked if anything can be done about it. Probably the best ways are not to reply to the email and to warn colleagues (and university IT services ) about it.

It does seem that an actual "conference" does take place - therefore it is quite likely that nothing illegal per se is taking place. Yes this isn't a proper conference at all, and clearly is aimed at exploiting hard pressed early-career academics. However it may not break any Chinese or Canadian laws (I wonder what jurisdiction it comes under?) - though would be interested in hearing a legal opinion on this.

Funny thing, the paper mentioned is about determination of adulteration on fuel using multidimensional chromatography. This would be an adequate topic for a psychiatry conference, only if the attendees and organizers are mental patients themselves.

Just got my third invitation from Dr. Yu Lao! This time to the "The 3rd Chongqing International Clinical Neuroscience Forum & NeuroDrug Conference, which is held in Chongqing, China from October 21 to 23, 2011".

I forwarded the e-mail to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/english/reportit_howtoreportfraud.html) with this e-mail:

Hello,

I am forwarding the email below because the conferences this person is organizing are a scam. Dr. Lu Yao solicits registration fees from potential attendees, but it is questionable whether the conferences actually happen. Because his address is in Canada, I believe you are the appropriate authorities to deal with him.

Please see this website [links to the page you are reading] for reports from dozens of people who have received similar e-mails. Academics report receiving invitations from Dr. Lu Yao to present their work at conferences that are not remotely related to their field of research – for instance, a geologist gets an invitation to an economics conference. It’s pretty clear that Dr. Lu Yao is sending spam to lots of people to try to get some fraction of them to part with registration fees for conferences that probably don’t happen.

Why would anyone send registration fees to Dr. Lu Yao? The answer is that in order to get tenure, academic faculty must demonstrate that their work is internationally recognized. Being invited to present at an overseas conference is prestigious and helps meet this requirement. But if the conference doesn’t happen – or if it happens and only 2 or 3 people attend, or if the attendance is composed entirely by people who attend just to be able to say they attended, not to interact with people in their field of work – then it’s not a real academic conference. It’s a fraud.

Hi everyone,

just got an invitation
"It is my great honor and pleasure to invite you to attend the EPS Montreal International Infectious Diseases Conference" in Montreal Quebec.

The paper of mine that was cited in the invitation is quite old (2001), and -- needless to say -- totally unrelated to the conference title. So my guess is the makeup of the "invitations" is random.

Thanks for the blog!

I received a similar invitation from the same individual/individuals. The email was sent from Yao Lu's address but was from Dr. Cengiz Morden,
Executive Chair of 2011 Turkey International Clinical Pharmacology and Rational Clinical Medication Forum. As a new faculty member, I was flattered to receive an invitation to present a recent publication at an international conference. After inquiring as to whether the conference organizers would pay travel and conference expenses and after receiving a denial for all expenses, I became suspicious. I received the first email on July 29, 2011.

I was invtied by the Organizing Committee to attend the 2011 Turkey International Clinical Pharmacology and Rational Clinical Medication Forum, which will be held in Tekirdag, Turkey during September 9-11, 2011.

I was welcomed "as our valuable speaker and present your recent work and ideas."

The event will be organized and hosted by Nam筴 Kemal University, in collaboration with EPS Global Medical Development Inc. of Canada.

The response to my inquiry about travel expenses was sent from Kate Law, Assistant to Dr. Yao Lu

The email indicated that I would have to pay all expenses related to the conference (including the registration fee of 700 Euros). Yet, they indicate how important it is "to have you in Tekirdag, sharing your prestigious works and findings to counterparts all around the world. We believe that there will be plenty of opportunities of collaboration and cooperation."

The last line is particularly inticing to new faculty members. I cannot speak as to whether these conferences are legitimate but as an "invited valuable speaker," I shouldn't have to pay for all expenses! Thanks to whomever started this blog!

I also recieved a invitation letter from this Dr Yao Lu for a conference with no program. One look at the website is enough to alarm you. I find it difficult to understand physicians and scientists would fall for this scam. It looks the routine is to collect enough speakers to make a profit (I don't know if Dr. Lu was successful).

Similar scams are also coming in the open source journals (again originating from China or Chinese, please I am trying my best not to sterotype). In this system, they ask you to become editors and contribute articles. The catch is that the publication charge is about $1500 per article. Since, everything is web based that is a handsome amount to pocket. Again, they want to publish in every scientifc area possible that should alert you.

How can we prevent these kind of scams. We should write letters to scientific journals or ask investigative reporters to follow these stories. Eventually it will reach larger audience and they go out of business.

Thanks for your blog.

The same happened to me just today; an invitation to this nonexistent EPS Montreal International Infectious Diseases Conference, which is supposed to take place in September (7th - 8th) 2011. Even in this case, I got the invitation for a relatively old paper of mine (Decompressive craniectomy in a case of intractable intracranial hypertension due to pneumococcal meningitis).

Exactly the same invitation (just another field of science), Lanzhou, China, same type of "program", same dates, no credible details about the "conference", no final detailed program or list of speakers just one month prior to the "conference", no committees, no details on the web. This is a spam, a sting, to get your $800 transferred directly to the bank account of some crooks.

Thank you for this blog.
A friend of my recieved the same spam.
There are some indication for spam, like as: no limit time of oral presentation, no name of speakers, no place of venue (only city), at site his e-mail is from gmail, no deadline for abstract, a lot of field of research.

I have been invited to the conference in Xi'an China on Higher Education. It is to be held on August 12-15, 2011. I telephoned EPS office in Canada and got all the details including names and numbers for the persons who are to meet me at Xi'an airport. I telephoned both persons in China, spoke to them and even exchanged emails. My suspicion arose when I called Xi'an Hotel and they told me that they have no conference booked for those days. I have already paid my registration fee, booked my flights and about to leave for China, when I found this site. I am going to see if I can recover my registration fee. The Agenda for the conference has eleven listed speakers for the english speaking portion. I am assuming that the "conference" will be held with only those persons who turn up.

Kind anonimous,
as you I'm one of the speaker. Fortunately I did not pay the registration fee and I will receive the full refund (the ticket contract was done with the possibility to refund completely) for air travel by edreams. Also I did call at the hotel and they told me that there is not a conference in higher education. July (the local contact) told me that the staying hotel will be another. Good luck

It is another trick for notorious EPS to suck money from academic. Something needs to be done to stop EPS that is located in Montreal, Canada, and operated by Yao Lu. Yao Lu and his associates search Pubmed for email address and then target all academic people. One of my friend unfortunately went to one of meetings and told me that the meeting had only about 15 speakers and 3 of Yao's girls! I think, anyone who is going to update his/her CV by saying him/her being a speaker in EPS meeting will seriously damage rather than improve his/her academic reputation.

Of course I sent a letter asking about travel and conference expenses but did not receive any reply.

I will try and distribute it through my university's mail servies.

Dear Dr.Aryeh,

I think you will get their response soon to ask you pay the so-called registeration fee. The accommodation fee will be included or not, you need to pay your air tickets and other fees.

In a word, whoever willing to pay the fee are welcome to all the conference. As my experience in their former "conference", Dr.Yao just care about the money, not the academic stuff, so you can see hundreds of EPS meeting in a year.

They are afraid of lack of fools only!

Best Wishes to you, Aryeh

After reviewing the comment, I can conclude the solution, just no payment to EPS company. That's the golden rule.

If you are interested in the conference or the vocation destination, check the local conference information, you could get the cheaper price and attend a real one.

Take the invitation letter as a notice and that's all.

Guess what? I had confirmed with my Chinese students to check the local news in Chinese. There is nothing about the EPS, meanwhile the government had held an pharmacological conference by the mayor. I believe the picture you can show if you really have is no signal for EPS. People were invited by a conference, but acturally were arranged to another conference. Dr.Yao Lu, so-called Director of Asian Department, Mcgill University Health Center, which I don't know have such a department or not, had cutted the fattest profits by inviting people.

I have been looking into this company in more detail. EPS Global Medical Development Inc's incorporated status is pending dissolution due to non-compliance with their filing requirements. There is no company by this name at 1625 or 1650 De Maisonneuve Boulevard (I was there today). However, there is a company trading as EPS International Development Inc. at Suite 305, 1650De Maissoneuve. However, no such copmany is legally incorporated in Canada, or the world as I can tell.

They do hold conferences. However, the issue is what constitutes a conference. This is what Lu is exploiting. He is praying on the need of academics to get invited speakerships. Everything is as a real conference would be, but then it doesn't take much to put together a conference. What it needs are speakers of high quality who have been selected by a scientific and organising committee, not a self-selecting group of individuals who are keen to improve their CV (I include myself among these).

Clearly, both in legal corporate terms and in the delivery of these conferences, this company is to be avoided. I only wish I had done this before paying to attend this conference. It seems that many of the people there don't seem to get that they are being scammed.

Some guy said 28 foreign experts attended Shi-jia-Zhuang Conference which having more than 300 audiences.

I am just wondering whether only 28 guys paid $800USD including Prof.Dr. Rozen from Mcgill. To tell you the turth, in my opinion, in most cases, the Chinese government organized the conference, held the banquet, and arranged the visit, which won't charge the foreign guests. The local Chinese government would like to even pay for their presentation, rather than charging the foreign experts.

If that hypothesis works, Dr.Lu and EPS company charged both sides and offered nothing.

By the way, I am waiting for the response from MUHC and Prof.Dr.Rozen. Let's see whether the Aisan Department and EPS Shi-jia-zhuang Conference exist or not.

EPS is authentic!

It is a really strange blog! It consists of around 50 mails of invited guests who dont trust it. But how could you all forget the thousands of attendees of these conferences who have already presented their works? The EPS global Inc. is an authentic Montreal Based Company and the conferences are also real. I was an invited guest at one of such cardiology conferences. And guess what, the conference was attended by around 2000 delegates around the world.
Ofcourse they dont pay for the travel but China is one such inviting country that they actually treat you like real invited delegates. Definitely much better than the rude American and European organizers.

Please learn about these conferences before commenting.

There were around 100 persons attending this conference, and about 40 experts gave speeches. I got much useful information at the session of Economy and Trade.

I went through all the comments on this post. Actually I am surprised that most of the bloggers dont actually get the concept of "conference". There are usually 3 types of presentations in any conference:
1)Free paper presenters
2)Invited speakers

The third type is what most of people are missing. It is:
3)The registered delegates
This third type of delegates are the delegates who have to pay for their presentation but retain their position as an invited delegate.

So now you can understand that the EPS global's method of working is actually about inviting registered delegates. The suspicious thing is their email. It looks like a spam. I enquired the reason why. It is actually because they are sent from China. Their staff in China are actually not very acquainted by mass email techniques. (Remember google was banned in China?). Otherwise there is nothing suspicious about them.

But it is not that the EPS doesnt have invited speakers. I was an invited speaker in last year Nanjing Neurology Conference. Perhaps most of you wont believe that I was not only paid accommodation and meals but also flight fares.

I am not writing this mail as an advocate of EPS because it invited me. But I want to highlight some of its strong positive points:

1)Through its conferences in China, it is actually exposing those high profile hospitals in Mainland China to the out-side country academic environment. I talked to the Director of the institute of one the conference and found that it was actually their idea to hold the conferences. EPS just helped them by outsourcing their information.

2)The EPS global provides discounts for registered delegates!! This is a point that most of the people of this blog have missed. Some of my friends have visited the conference for half of the registration fees on request :300$ discounted from 600$! Actually it depends on the hospital with which the EPS is collaborating. If the hospital allows then only the EPS can give a discount.

3) There is always an organizing committee and chairpersons for the lectures. I dont have to give other evidence because I was my self a chairperson for a session. For those who dont believe, please go through the souvenirs provided to the attendees.

As far as my experience goes, the EPS Global is doing a great work for China as well as other International experts because it is providing an interface for their interaction.

However, it is everyone's right to be suspicious and keep an account of their expenditures. So this blog is ok. But being so vindictive is unwanted and unexpected.

Dr. Liar, I will spread your reputation in my homeland and all my friends and colleagues.

That's a huge disgrace in that conference I paid my registeration fee and time to expect.

A lot of people left good words for Dr.Liar, now I believe you are all paid or Liar himself.

Just my private opinion, for future reference.

Anonymous said...

I dont know about others but I had a great experience at the Guangzhou EPS Neurology conference last year. The hospital had also arranged a cruise trip for us, which was fantastic.

It was a huge conference. But one lagging that I want to suggest to EPS is that there was no award paper. Next time, you should also arrange one given that you can afford such big scale conferences.

As soon as I read this I thougth it was a spam-ference. First, my paper has no relation with the supossed medical themes of the conference. Also, be invited as a guest speaker less than a month before the conference sounds very strange. Then, I did the same as you did and went to the webpage of the conference: no programe, no list of speakers, etc... And the pictures of the previous meetings are so fake!!

Anyway, just for fun I sent them an email saying than if they can pay me everything I will be happy to attend. Now I just wait to see their reply.

A collegue of mine did receive a similar invitation for a conference in Canada a month before. The funny thing about this is that in all pictures you only see asian people!

Cheers!

Many thanks for your blog.

Hehe, smiling and reading. Somehow these scamference-organizers have found a sweet spot: academic people in need for a few lines in their cv:s. I find it surprising that actually some have been there.

But there are a lot of science/academia spam out there. Another is/was "Principal Investigator" and recently I have received spam with "oomics" in it.

From a friend I heard about a turnaround scenario: Once a researcher suddenly appeared at their department. He said that he would like to keep a presentation. So they gathered a few of the staff an listened in. He kept his presentation and then wanted them to sign a paper. Apparently he got his travel expenses paid as he had kept a lecture or something. I guess he continued his paid holiday travels in the region after that;-)

Just a thought: What if a few researchers meet at one of these scam-conferences by chance, smack their brainy heads together and actually invent something really clever. Then this conference would get a lot of attention and the following year people would happily pay 2000$ to get there. I mean, there is always the chance;--)

I think everyone agrees that this is a sophisticated kind of spam that targets scholars and students specifically (I received 2 or 3 invitations, I lost count). And while the individual who runs this scam sure has a very low ethical standard and could rival with some of the better crooks out there, I don't think it's justified (or mature, frankly) to assume that "The ethical standard of the Canadian Nation is close to zero. There are some good people there, but most people are corrupt. I am talking about a level of corruption similar to what exsisted in the communist countries".

This sort of rubbish comment is callous and doesn't have a place on a blog like this. Academics everywhere are trying to shed light on this Lu Yao's activities - focus on that alone, will you.

This time the topics have some distant connections to my research. it was quite recent (2009) publication, although not so significant, that they(?) were talking about. The thing I wanted to point out (which I didn't see in previous posts here) is this promise of a publication in a real journal with reasonably high impact factor!

Anyway, I've to admit that I didn't realize this scam immediately, but thanks to this blog, didn't sign up yet either :) Respect!

Hi, I have seen the EPS webpage. So poor Professor Massaro will be in 3 conferences in the same time (nov. 3-4): Biochemistry & Biophysics, International Translational Medicine Conference and International Gene Conference. I wonder whether he knows about it.
